Secretary’s Report: The Secretary’s Report for the January 7, 2010 monthly council meeting and the January 10, 2010 special congregational meeting were reviewed. Ardell Nelson moved that the reports be approved as presented. Mark Granquist seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report: Pam Nelson gave the report on behalf of treasurer, Mary Bjordahl. She reviewed the account balances as of the end of January 2010. She noted that account balances as of February 10, 2010 are as follow: general fund-$16,506.33, dedicated fund-$37,056.44, building fund- $5,055.07, and building loan balance is at $215,000.00. Pam noted that there is $17,842.50 in outstanding pending bills and that stewardship of at least $1,336.17 is needed yet this month to cover the outstanding bills. A motion was made by Brian Sandvig and seconded by Kristen Ash to approve the Treasurer’s Report as presented. Motion passed.
Pastor’s Report: Pastor Janine and Pastor Craig reviewed the visitations, funerals, baptisms, weddings and other events since the last council meeting. They made 5 home visits, 8 hospital visits and attended 17 meetings. They conducted 1 funeral, and there were no baptisms or weddings since the last meeting. Other pastoral acts
included nursing home services on January 28th and January 31st and helping with Meals on Wheels January 25th-29th. It was noted that “Healing Touch” classes are no longer being held at the church. They noted the upcoming events: Ash Wednesday on February, 17, Maundy Thursday (First Communion) on April 1st, Easter on April 4th, Confirmation on May 2nd, and graduating senior recognition on May 9th.
Property and Management Committee Report: Hasslen Construction is looking at the leaking sky light to try to determine the cause. An insurance adjuster has looked at the damage caused by the leak. Our insurance will cover any internal damage; however, we do have a $1,000 deductible. Dewey Athey has been contacted about doing light snow removal.
Worship Committee Report: The worship committee had nothing to report other than to note that the Church will be host to the Concordia College Choir Tour. Among other things, this will entail providing meals and housing for approximately 90 choir members.
Evangelism Committee Report: The annual fishing outing is scheduled for February 20th. The committee reported they have a preliminary list for the “Love in Action” groups and are working on finalizing the
groups/schedule. The committee is also looking at possibly re starting the “food & fellowship” program for congregational members who would like to participate. Suggestions regarding the rebirth of this activity would be welcome. The committee also noted that it has been suggested that the church look at trying to provide staffing for the nursery for the 2nd worship service each Sunday. They will look at possible options for doing this.
Youth and Education Committee Report: The committee noted that the Des Moines mission trip is moving forward and that 3 youth and Mike Haddican plan on participating. Lent suppers will be starting on February 17th and will start at 5:15 p.m. with the worship service at 6:30 p.m. Free will donations will go into the youth account. “WOW” continues to be very strong with approximately 70 kids attending. The elementary youth are currently studying the parables. Mike Haddican is going to speak at the worship services on February 21st to solicit more volunteers for the “circle of friends” group.
Finance Committee Report: The committee had nothing to report.
Old Business: Ron Anderson reported on meetings which were held on January 10th in Watertown and Sioux Falls.
New Business: Discussion was held regarding American Lutheran Church’s response to the August 2009 ELCA vote on the “Sexuality Statement”. The council spent a considerable amount of time discussing and drafting a proposed time line for the congregation to determine its position/response to the vote and any-related action plan. Following the discussion June Seehafer moved to approve the preliminary timeline for the congregation’s response. Ardell Nelson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. This timeline will be presented to the congregation at an open forum between church services on February 28, 2010. Further discussion was held
regarding the issue. Kristen Ash moved, and Tom Schuneman seconded a motion that the council set up 2 committees to assist in implementing activities within the proposed timeline. The 2 committees will be as
follow: Study and Response Committee-establish a core group within the congregation to study and understand the August 2009 ELCA Sexuality Statement and to study the impact/ramifications for American Lutheran Church. Committee to Study Alternative Denominations-establish a group of members to study alternative
synods and be prepared to make a recommendation to the congregation in the event that the decision is made to leave the ELCA. Motion passed unanimously.
Ardell Nelson reported that they have been searching for insurance quotes for the church. He has been informed that the church has to provide a copy of its sexual harassment policy before companies will give a quote for the insurance. Since the church currently does not have a policy in place this will have to be established.
The next council meeting will be Wednesday, March 10th at 7:30 p.m. Evangelism committee will have devotions.
Adjournment: Mark Granquist made a motion to adjourn. Tom Schuneman seconded the motion. Motion passed.
We closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
Respectively submitted,
Dave Hepper, Secretary |
