AMERICAN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH
COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
November 11, 2009
Present at the meeting were Ron Anderson, Dennis Mears, Rosann Kasuske, Kevin Schuelke, Chuck Foss, Mark Granquist, Bryan Johnson, Sheila Bien, June Seehafer, Mary Hepper, Dorothy Larson, Terry Forster, John Gustafson, Pastor Janine, Pastor Craig and Mary Bjordahl.
President Ron Anderson called the meeting to order.
Devotions were lead by Ron Anderson.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made by Dennis Mears and seconded by Mary Hepper to approve the October 14, 2009 minutes as printed.
Treasure’s Report: Mary Bjordahl reviewed the accounts and balances as of the end of October. Expected bills to be paid by the end of November would be $9,500. Thrivent Financial will no longer sponsor the Simply Giving Program. A motion was made by Kevin Schuelke to accept their position and not use their program. Dorothy Larson
seconded the motion.
Pastors’ Report: There were no funerals, baptisms or weddings this month. Pastors Craig and Janine reported on the Regional CORE meeting in Watertown. About 350 people attended including eighteen members of American Lutheran Church. Council members that were able to attend reported that it was very good. A summary of information sheet was given to each council member. There will be another CORE meeting in Sioux Falls sometime in January. A CORE meeting is also scheduled for
November 30th in Morris, MN. Members have had many concerns about giving to the synod, giving to camps, and will the teachings change at the camps. Lutheran Outdoors is its own organization, which has
a board that hires the director. At this time we know who the director is. It is important that camps are always checked out about their teachings before we send our children. The pastors are willing to answer any questions that people may have.
There was a discussion on the remaining SD synod budget of $6,000 and on the pensions. CORE recommends changing the benevolence that goes to the SD synod. Shiela Bien made a motion that the council recommend that the decision for the remaining $6,000 of the benevolence budget to the SD synod be voted on at the annual meeting to be redirected. June Seehafer seconded the motion. The motion passed.
A thank you was given to Sheila Bien, Bryan Johnson, Mary Hepper and Dorothy Larson for their service on the council.
Committee Reports
Property Management: The annual report was given to Pam. Kevin Schuelke will remain on the Property Management committee.
Worship: The Advent and Christmas services are being prepared.
Evangelism: There was nothing to report.
Youth and Education: The stable service is being prepared. The WOW/Sunday School Christmas Program is December 16th and 20th. The 3rd and 5th grades have received their parts. Circle of friend leaders and a couple of teachers are still needed. Preschoolers
have increased in numbers so more teachers were added.
Finance: There was nothing to report except that Dennis Mears would continue to work on the budget.
Old Business: The forums will continue.
New Business: Ardell Nelson requested to use the Multi Purpose room for 1 hour each Saturday at 10:00 am for the Torah Study group. Mark Granquist made a motion to allow the Torah Study group to use the Multi Purpose room on Saturdays. Sheila Bien seconded the motion. The motion passed.
The nominating committee recommended the following names for council positions: Kristen Ash, Brian Sandvig, Jon Ydstie, Tom Schuneman, Ardell Nelson, Dave Hepper and Kevin Schuelke to complete the one year term for Jerry Hetlet.
Bryan Johnson made the motion to adjourn. Mary Hepper seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Dennis Mears led closing devotions. We closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Rosann Kasuske
Secretary
