AMERICAN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH
COUNCIL MEETING MINTUTES
OCTOBER 14, 2009
Present at the meeting were Ron Anderson, Dennis Mears, Rosann Kasuske, Kevin Schuelke, Chuck Foss, Bryan Johnson, Sheila Bien, June Seehafer, Dorothy Larson, Terry Forster, John Gustafson, Pastor Janine, Pastor Craig, Mike Haddican, and Mary Bjordahl.
President Ron Anderson called the meeting to order.
Devotions were lead by Sheila Bien.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made by Dennis Mears and seconded by Bryan Johnson to approve the September 9, 2009 minutes as printed.
Treasurer’s Report: Mary Bjordahl reviewed the accounts and balances as of the end of September. Expected bills to be paid by the end of October would be $22,000. It was mentioned that some members are withholding offering until a decision is made about the future of the church. There was a discussion on the 3 checking accounts, General, Dedicated and the Building. Donations to the new building fund in September were $3,100. There was a discussion on how gifts of money are handled. A motion to approve the treasurer’s report was made by June Seehafer, seconded by Kevin Schuelke.
Pastor’s Report: Pastor Craig and Pastor Janine reviewed the visitations, funerals, baptisms, weddings, September events and
upcoming events. Chris Groghan will preach on Reformation Sunday. Pastor Janine has been a member of the Augustana Board of Regents for 12 years and her last meeting will be in December.
Property & Management: The basketball hoop will be replaced. Projected projects include resurfacing the parking lot and shingling the parsonage. Kranz will do snow removal. This was the only option. Ron Anderson sprayed the lawn.
Worship: A letter from Mary Bjordahl requesting the use of the handbells for the Handbell Festival at Brandon, October 24 was received. A motion to approve this request was made by Dorothy Larson, seconded by Sheila Bien. The lefse fundraiser will be November 13th and 14th. Plans are also being made for the Advent Service.
Evangelism: The signup for the prison visitation included 3 people. MOPS have not responded.
Youth & Education: In preparation for the Christmas Program they will be practicing during Sunday School starting November 15. There will be no Sunday School November 29. The Senior Citizen’s Supper is this Sunday night, October 18. Leaf raking is scheduled for October 24 & 25. WOW was closed the 2nd week due to illness. 70 children are registered, 40 are members and 25 are not members. There is a need for Circle of Friends leaders from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm. There is also a need for teachers. More volunteers are needed because of increase in attendance. Please contact Mike or Shiela.
Finance: Both a one year budget and a 6 month budget are being requested. The fund raising project is being planned for next
year.
Old Business: The congregational survey on responses to the ELCA sexuality policy change was reviewed and it will be put in the Newsletter and on the web site. Discussion meetings will continue between the services on Sunday in the fellowship hall. Pastor Janine reported on the CORE meeting. Pastor Craig and Pastor Janine presented information on the LCMC. They emphasized the importance of praying that the right decision be made.
New Business: Dennis Mears made a motion that the remaining budget of $6,000 that was pledged to the SD Synod be put on the table until the next meeting. It will then be decided whether to send it to synod or other benevolences. Bryan Johnson seconded it. The motion passed.
Reports are needed for each committee by the end of October.
A special meeting to discuss budget will be at 7:30 pm October 28, 2009.
A motion to adjourn was made by Dennis Mears, seconded by June Seehafer.
