The August 30th Lutherans Outdoors annual quilt/craft auction brought in $30,000 plus. This was held at Joy Ranch northwest of Watertown. Proceeds benefit our 5 S.D. Bible Camps. Our church donated two quilts – Carole Walford’s smaller quilt brought $300 and Heidi Christenson’s queen sized quilt brought $400. We are grateful for their talents and sharing. September 16 and 17 six of our women joined a tour group of Lutheran women from eastern SD which bussed to
the Twin Cities to see Church Basement Ladies II, in St. Paul. These are the two places all of our quilts and kits go to be packaged for shipment overseas. We got to spend several hours at Global Health
helping with sorting and packaging bandages, layettes, etc. One of the staff of Lutheran World Relief from New York was able to spend time with us at the warehouse, answering numerous questions. We saw just how they fold the quilts so they can be baled (about 25 in a bale), then double bagged in plastic, ready to be loaded in a shipping container. We learned that 1,455 tons of quilts and kits worth $13 million went to more than 740,000 people in 27 different countries in 2008. Quilters continue to need: clean use sheets, blankets, mattress pads, print and solid materials – no wool or stretchy. We cannot use silky or real thin materials. Thank you for all the materials you keep sharing!
