Time Flies |

By the time you read this we will have returned, God willing, from a ten day vacation trip to visit my parents in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I write this the day before we leave. Have you ever noticed how time speeds up when you are on vacation? It seems to me that the second half always goes by faster than the first. But that seems to be a "law" of time. The second half of summer goes by faster than the first. Weren't we enjoying Memorial Day and the beginning of summer just yesterday? Yet the Fourth of July is already weeks ago. School will be starting in about three weeks. We look forward all winter to the warm days of summer and vacation and they go by in the blink of an eye. The second half of life goes by faster than the first as well. I am almost fifty years old. When I was in first grade I had no conception of time. I actually believed that the school year and summer were both the same length! A year was an eternity. Now a year goes by so fast I can't keep up with it. Wasn't I just in High School? Didn't I just graduate from college? Didn't we just get married? Weren't our three children just born? The more I try to hold onto the time the more it seems to slip through my fingers. The Bible tells us that God has put eternity into men's minds. Our awareness of how little time we have reminds us that there has to be more, and gives us a longing for the eternal completeness and rest that only God can give us. Psalm 90 says, "For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night." Psalm 103 says, "As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more." Our vacation will fly by. Summer will soon be over. That sounds very depressing. This short life would be depressing if it was all we had. Let the reminders that the time is short and life fleeting be opportunities to thank God for the time we have been given. Don't take even one hour or one day for granted. And thank God that he has given us the promise of eternity beyond this life through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Before we know it we will be in heaven. We will be able to hold onto the people we love without ever losing them, and time will be something we will never have to worry about again. Imagine that, if you can find the time.
