Programs and Services
American Lutheran Church is a busy place, offering many services to both the congregation and the community.
Worship in the Sanctuary
There are two Sunday morning worship services with a total attendance between 350 and 400. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is one service with attendance between 250 and 300.
Wednesday evening worship in the summer, from June through August, serves an average attendance of 55.
Wednesday evening Lent services serve an average attendance of 250.
Every Monday evening there is a Prayer Service in the chapel for 5 to 10 people.
Special services throughout the year include Thanksgiving eve, Christmas Eve, Holy Week and services brought on by events such as September 11th. The attendance on Christmas Eve is over 600.
There are many weddings, funerals, and other occasional services such as private baptisms.
Music
Several choirs practice at the church every Wednesday night during the school year. The Chorister Choir (youth), with about 12 members, and the Chancel (adult) choir, with about 18 members, practices in the fireside room. The "M&Ms" (children) practice in the Sunday school music area. The "Signs of the Times" (sign language) of about 20 members practices at various times during the week in the sanctuary or i nthe fireside room. the "Allelu" contemporary music group with about 10 members practices one or two evenings a month in the sanctuary. The Bell Choir, with nine members, practices every Wednesday evening in the sanctuary.
Christian Education
Sunday school consists of teachers and 157 students in grades K-12. There are about 15 to 20 students in the high school class. Twenty to thirty adults participate in adult Sunday school classes every week.
Two Confirmation classes (7th and 8th grade), each about twenty students, meet at the church every Wednesday afternoon during school early release time.
The High School youth meet for activities at the church once or twice a month. Elementary age youth meet each Wednesday after school in the fellowship hall for Christian educational activities.
Over 100 children from preschool through 6th grade attend Vacation Bible School at the chruch for a week every summer.
Service and Fellowship
There is something going on in the fellowship all almost every day. On Sunday morning between services the south end is filled people people enjoying coffee and fellowship, and the north end is filled with people attending adult sunday school. One Sunday a month there is a "Love in Action"/New Members potluck following church services.
The women of the church spend two Tuesdays every month using the entire fellowship hall for quilting. The Prayer Shawl ministry group uses the fellowship hall one or two evenings a month to knit and crochet shawls for the sick and shut-ins.
WELCA and circles, Chruch Council, and task forces such as the Strategic Planning Committee and Building Committee use the fellowship hall serveral times a month for meetings.
The fellowship hall is used as a gathering place before funerals and to serve meals following funerals.
The fellowship hall hosts special events throughout the year such as the annual Senior Citizens Supper, Pancake Feed, Wednesday Lent suppers, Kumla Supper, and special celebrations.
The various youth groups use the fellowship hall for activities and meals.
Community Activities
The Milbank Boy Scout Troop 45 uses the fellowship hall every Monday night for their troop meetings and activities.
The Milbank Girl Scout Troop 3412 uses the fellowship hall two Monday evenings a month for their troop meetings and activities.
Koch Elementary School uses the Sunday school area one day every fall for preschool screening.
Lutheran Social Services uses the Sacristy every Tuesday as a satellite counseling office, serving up to nine clients a week.
